DOUBLE VISION — MORPHOS INQUIRY
January 5 - February 14, 2010
Meet the artists at the exhibit's opening reception on Saturday, January 9, 4 – 6 pm
The extreme textile art installation, Double Vision - Morphos Inquiry, explores Victorian erotic sensibilities and the scientific biological order as inspired by the writings of Charles Darwin, Carl Jung, Vladimir Nabokov, and A.S. Byatt.
Both artists experiment with modern and traditional techniques and materials to create complex surfaces and three-dimensional forms. While Patricia is inspired by fossils and curio cabinets, Hilary has a love for ornate tapestries and embroideries from the late 18th century.
Patricia is a Vancouver-based mixed media artist who studied at Capilano College's Textile Arts and Design Program and was recently chosen as the program's top student in the University's 40 Over 40 Years: Alumni of Inspiration. She was also the recipient of the Handweavers Guild Of America’s Convergence New Waves Award.
Before coming to Canada, Hilary worked as the senior in-house designer with the Scottish Lace Company, the last remaining manufacturer of cotton Nottingham Lace. While studying at Edinburgh College of Art, she won an award from Osborne and Little for her work at London's prestigious New Designers show.
Both Patricia and Hilary are actively engaged in textile arts education.
